DDG: Anonymous $100K Donation Boosts Boy’s Lemonade Stand Cancer Fundraiser

After learning about federal cuts to cancer research, Rowan Rieve, a 12-year-old boy from metro Atlanta, ran a lemonade stand to support the cause and raised $22.25, but his donation quickly led to a much larger response. Rowan, who has been undergoing treatment for brain tumors since 2021, gave the money to the hospital where he receives care, saying he wanted to help other children.

His act of kindness spread online, prompting others to match his donation amount, but then an anonymous donor heard about the tween’s effort and contributed $100-thousand to the cause! His neuro-oncologist, Dr. Tobey MacDonald, says the reaction reflects the way Rowan inspires people.

He was first diagnosed with cancer at age eight and has undergone surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy as part of his continuing treatment. He says he wanted the funds to go to the hospital because he felt it needed them more.
