A group of Salt Lake City high school students recently pulled off an elaborate promposal for one of their classmates, Jayne, a 17-year-old with Down syndrome. The moment involved a trumpet, a scroll, and Jayne’s potential prom date, Carter, arriving on a pony. Multiple teens from a peer tutoring program who regularly spend time with Jayne through classroom support and unified sports activities worked together to pull off the promposal.
She had been told she would be asked to prom but not how, and she reacted with excitement as the moment unfolded, smiling and repeatedly saying it was the best night ever. Her mother, Summer Adamson, describes watching the event from their home and seeing Jayne’s joy as the teens carried out the plan together.
Summer says the promposal was possible because of the daily interactions between her daughter and her classmates through the school’s programs, where students choose to participate and assist their peers. She shares their experiences online to show their journey and says Jayne is now looking forward to attending prom with her friends.
