DDG: Firefighters Save 25Million Honey Bees Stuck In Overheating Truck

Last week, firefighters in Parley’s Canyon, Utah, responded to an unusual rescue after a semi-truck carrying hundreds of honey bee hives broke down on the highway. The Millcreek Fire Department says the trailer held 480 hives containing an estimated 25-million bees. Mechanics worked on the truck while firefighters sprayed a light water mist over the trailer to help cool the hives in the hot weather.

Officials say the bees were at risk because the parked truck no longer had airflow from highway travel. The department shared in a post to social media, “With the unseasonable hot temperatures yesterday, the bees were at risk of dying if the truck stayed parked in the sun for too long.” Fortunately, none of the firefighters were stung during the rescue.

The department describes the event as “one of the coolest reminders” that firefighters respond to many different kinds of emergencies, adding that, “Sometimes they save 25 million bees, too.”
