DDG: Community Surprises Boy With Rare Genetic Disorder With Treehouse

The community of Bristol, Rhode Island, recently organized a surprise celebration for eight-year-old Nolan Thompson, who’s undergoing chemotherapy for a rare genetic condition that causes tumors on nerve tissue. Nolan and his five-year-old sister Avery rode to Mt. Hope High School in a firetruck with a police escort, believing he was there to receive an award from the town.

Nolan is currently receiving his second round of chemotherapy for tumors affecting his brain and optic nerve, while Avery recently underwent open-heart surgery after doctors discovered a hole in her heart. Their father, Seth Thompson, says the family faced months of anxiety while supporting both children through medical treatment. Community members helped the family with meal trains, gift cards, and other support during that time.

When the family arrived at the school, they were greeted by police officers, firefighters, students, staff, and Nolan’s classmates wearing “Team Nolan” shirts, along with people dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star. After receiving a town proclamation, Nolan discovered the main surprise: a pineapple-shaped treehouse built through a partnership between Rosemary’s Wish Kids and the school’s construction management class. The treehouse includes hammock swings, a television, and an outlook tower, and Nolan reacted by shouting, “I love it!”
