An Alabama dad is sharing his near drowning story to remind others about summer pool safety. Brad Hassig was in the family pool with his twin 10-year-old sons and their friend when the boys suddenly had to save him. Hassig was doing breathing exercises underwater when he lost consciousness.
Sons Christian and Bridon and their 11-year-old neighbor Sam Ebert sprang into action, jumping into the pool and pulling Brad out. Bridon then started CPR, remembering what he saw in the movies “Hook” and “The Sandlot.” Christian then had to run down the street and flag someone down to call 911.
Meanwhile a cardiologist neighbor came to help and first responders assisted stabilizing Brad. Hassig had hypoxia (low oxygen in the organs and tissue), pulmonary edema (caused by fluid buildup in the lungs) and shortness of breath. He still has breathing issues but is recovering slowly.
As for Christian and Bridon, they are getting cell phones for emergencies and will take CPR courses. Brad says "It's a reward but it's also for peace of mind," he explained. "With the Fourth of July coming up, we need (more) water safety awareness."
